Capt. Edward Riggs

Edward was enrolled in Plattsburgh and mustered in as a 1st lieutenant of August 10, 1862. By December 9, 1862, he was commissioned captain. After a bout of typhoid, he was so weakened that he resigned with the rank of captain and returned to Glens Falls. Later, he and Sheriff Dan Brown from Glens Falls were sent South to recruit Negroes to count towards the quota of men required from their town, and both went down with the Steam Packet Melville, a former Confederate blockade runner.
